On stage in EIE2019 – Engage, Invest, Exploit, the leading start-up showcase in Edinburgh.

I am a smart city and open data expert with background in architecture, digital media and urban events. Since 2018 I’ve been leading the Data Driven Innovation programme at the University of Edinburgh as the Executive Director. The ten-year, £660m initiative spans across ten industry domains from creative industries and healthcare to fintech and robotics. The DDI programme is part of the £1.3bn Edinburgh City Region Deal.

I’m also a member of the Smart London Board, board member of Open Knowledge Foundation, former founder and vice chair of the Open & Agile Smart Cities network OASC and former President of the European Network of Living Labs ENoLL.

Previously I was based in London as the Chief Innovation and Technology Officer of the Future Cities Catapult (renamed Connected Places Catapult). From 2006 to 2016 I was the CEO of Forum Virium Helsinki, innovation lab of the City of Helsinki, and before that the Executive Director of the Media Centre Lume of the Aalto University since 2001 (That ticks up to two decades of working in tech… Damn I’m old).

I moved to technology from the cultural sector. I was the Program Director of the Helsinki 2000 European Capital of Culture, and an entrepreneur in the 90’s, leading the cultural promotion company PopZoo Promotions and producing for example the Huvila Festival Tent of the Helsinki Festival.

As a former professional promoter and DJ, I still buy more music (on vinyl) than I have time to listen to. I love cycling, both in cities and on the hills.
